Popular Social-Media
Some popular social media shown above moving from left to right are, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter, Tik Tok and Pinterest.
Social Networks: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn
Media Sharing Networks: Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube
Bookmarking & Content Curation Networks Pinterest
For example, Tik Tock is currently the leader in social media for young people. Tik Tock uses app for IOS and Android cellular phones for short videos that blends entertainment with your written content message in short 15 to 60 seconds and to 3 minutes videos in length that is easy mix and match on various platform.
Interpersonal: WhatsApp, twitter, snapchat, Tik Tok, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram. The order does not rank them as one is more superior or important than the other. I have grouped them for interpersonal to keep in touch with friends, family, Colleagues and love ones. These are some benefits of social media platforms.
Academic: In the academic section Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter, Tik Tok and Pinterest social media are used at many levels. They are used to engage students.
Professional Communication: LinkedIn - business networking platform that allows business people and professionals all over the world regardless of their type of industry, to connect with other professionals. It is a professional social media network rather than an entertaining platform. Professionals and students are using this platform for career growth. And
Compare and Contrast Social Media Platforms
Venn Diagram
I constructed the above Venn diagram to compared and contrast the three areas: Interpersonal, Academic and Professional communications. When there is a compare and contrast the social media whether they are video sharing based, networking or story board or telephone they overlap.
YouTube and Facebook fall in the center of Interpersonal, Academic and Professional communications
WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat fall in Interpersonal, and Academic
LinkedIn fall in Academic and Professional communications.
All these social media can be used for education at many levels to fostered students’ learning and engagement. Select by the demographics. For example, Snapchat is an application used as a method to talk with friends, family and share photographs, videos and play around with filters. Snapchat is used to write personal information in simple sentences.
I found a study conducted by Stalin & Tan, (2020) on English as a Second Language primary school students in Malaysia. This study shows a significant improvement in sentence construction of personal information after the use of Snapchat among the primary school students in a simple sentence writing practice.
Cetinkaya (2017) conducted a study on secondary school grade 10 students ages 15 -16 on The Impact of WhatsApp which is designed for mobile phones. It reinforces that WhatsApp support the teaching and learning process. For instance, by creating dialogue with parents and students; communicating with students reminders of homework, PTA meetings for parents to attend, Thus nurturing a social environment. These are some benefits of social media platforms.
As I reflected, my cat, Wednesday, looked up at me. I felt that she wanted to help me out. I asked her what she thought about social media? My kitty, just stared and stared. I told her I would think some more.
As I reflect on the Business View Point – All Social-Media are eligible, depending on the target audience, age group and media used. The platforms can crossover and be linked. These are some of the benefits of social media platforms.
Social Media Used by me in three areas such as: Interpersonal, Academic and Professional.
Interpersonal -WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.
Academic – YouTube for making my videos and searching for content for my classes, I also teach about digital citizenship and to be responsible when using the internet.
Professional - LinkedIn, for Professional communications.
Choice 1 YouTube platform
• Social Media: YouTube platform (Closed group/Administrator will also be enrolled in my class which is a closed controlled group). The convenience online environment is good for learning but it is also dangerous. As an Educator of minors, I have a ‘responsibility to engage students in safe ways and capture their interest thus a closed platform where I have control.
• Demographics: Senior School students grades 10 to 12. Age 14 to 18 years.
• Justification: This type of learner surf YouTube for music and videos.
• Assignments: 4 to 12 minutes videos unlisted. I also teach about digital citizenship and to be responsible when using the internet.
The Educator that I identify and follow is Mr. Dan Dubay. His YouTube Channel is called “youtube.com/user/dubayguru.
In my context as a business educator, I need to come out of my comfort zone of using YouTube and try new tools. Hence, my next choice.
Choice 2 Facebook Platform
Optional Assignments by Tik Tok
Social Media: Facebook platform (Closed group/ Administrator will also be enrolled in my class which is a closed controlled group). I would utilize Facebook as a primary LMS. Facebook can operate as a tool for announcements, sharing course documents, course tutorials, and discussions. Facebook features such as the Facebook wall, Event function and Feedback space or discussion function can allow several types of activities. Based on the target audience, I would also integrate Tik Tock.
Researchers Schindler, et al. (2017), mentioned that when planning to use technologies they should be carefully select based on their strengths, weaknesses, limitations and the intended learning outcomes or goals.
• Demographics: Senior School students grades 10 to 12. Age 14 to 18 years.
• Justification: Based on this type of learners uses Facebook and Tik Tok.
• Assignments: Some by Tik Tok for short 60 seconds to 3 minutes videos.
• Some Activities: On Facebook Discussions, comments, like, dislike
The Educator that I identify and follow is Mr. Dan Dubay. On Facebook his address is: https://www.facebook.com/www.dubayrocks
Based on the two social media platforms, YouTube a video media sharing and Facebook a social networking site both have their strengths, weaknesses and limitations, I feel that depending on what you want to achieve you would choose the right one for your purpose based on the target audience, demographics and learning outcomes.
