Making My Video
The purpose of my assignment was to create a video for social media in higher education and focus on responsible use, privacy and security issues. I believe, the persons in higher education want to use social media, but these issues were a concern for their students and faculty.
My task objective was to research social media in higher education and focus on responsible use, privacy and security issues. Then create a video and upload it to YouTube.
The method I used to conduct my research was by online journal articles, interviewing educators at my school who use social media, YouTube search engine, and Google search engine. I, "Googled it"".
As I reflected on my experiences of module 4’s YouTube Assignment, my video on social media in higher education which outlined responsible use, privacy and security issues in using social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp had some nail-biting moments. When using these social media digital tools within a course, these tools can encourage meaningful engagement and reflection activities in an online and blended course for students.
As I reflected, I looked at how I made all my previous videos using PowerPoint slides and then converted to video. I also visited my earlier blog post. See link https://ilonkasargent.blogspot.com/p/blog-4.html
I examined the assignment criteria and it provided grades for music, pictures, images. Since I used a new computer that had installed Microsoft Office Suite 2021, I needed to learn how to add background music across all slides. Therefore, I searched the “University of YouTube” online and found helpful tutorials on how to accomplish this task.
In my research efforts on finding research articles on social media in higher education, YouTube video clips on responsible use, privacy and security issues, I was able to immerse myself into a whole new world on things that I had taken for granted. For example, setting account to “Private” and cookies or breadcrumbs that leave digital footprints which can be tracked by anyone. In some cases, possible cyber stalkers.
I learned several alarming things like Facebook, in December 2018, Twitter in July 2020, and Instagram in January, 2021 had cases in privacy & Security issues. The security of personal data was stollen. Wow! These scandals involved the theft of data from half a billion of its users. That is too much! The data stolen included the users' personal data such as their birthdates, phone numbers, email addresses, and full names.
In the planning and writing of the script for the small video production for 6 to 8 minutes, I wrote in Microsoft Word first and then transfer to the PowerPoint slides. I did not realize that the updated version of Microsoft PowerPoint 2021 had a recording feature that allows for you to copy and paste information in the presenter notes and it can be placed on the screen whilst recording. Brilliant feature that presented a wow moment! I learned how to use this by searching on YouTube how-to-use search feature.
For recording the video, the music presented a challenge. So, I asked my son who likes to play music a lot. He recommended that I search for free music on YouTube music library. Wow, I followed his advice and selected something appropriate for the topic. I also kept in mind copyright laws violations for graphics and images because if I posted something YouTube would take it down or even prohibit me from even uploading the video to the YouTube channel. Where to find free music for your video link Best Copyright Free Music for YouTube Videos — Top 3 Sites - YouTube. I also experienced challenges with the color scheme for the slides and timing. I had to record several slides over until I got under 8 minutes. Once I uploaded my video to the YouTube channel, I checked to see if was ok. I navigated the platform to see what other videos were posted similar to mines.
Now as I reflected on what I would do differently. I would check my microphone headset for noise cancelling features so that there is no unwanted static in the background for clearer crisp sound and do not talk so close to the mic. I will have to search on YouTube on how to accomplish that for future recordings. I would also practice different types of “voices” and see how it sounds.
Research Results
My Colleagues Video Making
Several of my colleagues in my course made videos on the topic: Social Media in Higher Education which outlined responsible use, privacy and security issues in using social media platforms. I watched all, but was only able to response with liked and make comments on 3 as the feature was not enabled. As I watched the videos, I made notes.
Dan
For Dan, I liked the video. It was original as it used the traditional classroom setting. It was something that I was use to seeing. The teacher – Dan- at the whiteboard explaining the topic and the content was the focal point. The whiteboard with the text in black and the red markers to highlight or draw attention to particular items. I would have used red to highlight responsible use, privacy and security issues. The teacher's facial expressions, and voice was clear and engaging and placed one in a reflective mode in some instances. When I compared this to my video presentation in which used a different voice, color in the background and moving animations of the text, images and background music this was a complete contrast. I never thought of this approach for this assignment. Umm, nice.
The subtopic of responsible use, privacy and security issues was clearly explained. But I would have liked to hear some background music. As I reflected, I got a takeaway from Dan’s video. I learned something which was my Video that was posted on this class YouTube channel I would not have access to it if I wanted to make changes once the course is over and closed. This begs the question, what will happen to the class work that is posted on this YouTube channel? For me I will re post on my own YouTube channel so that I can have full access and control. I can also use in my future classes. Dan's video link https://youtu.be/dNddptzz2vo
Dianne
For Dianne, I liked the video on Social Media in Higher Education. It was original as it used a lot of white space in the background and it was very engaging. The use of color was good. The teacher covered the subtopic: responsible use, privacy and security issues. The teacher’s voice was clear. The talking points was easy to follow and the transitions was good. As I reflected, I got a takeaway from Dianne’s video when compared to my video. I learned something which was digital citizenship should be taught in all schools. I took a break from reviewing the videos. My cat, Junei gave me some comfort while I pet him and drank a cup of tea. I later returned and started reviewing videos again.
Sandor
For Sandor, I liked the video on Social Media in Higher Education. It was on point with the subtopics: responsible use, privacy and security issues. But I had an issue with too much text on the screen, the color was too dull looking for a white background. I feel like the text could have been a bit bolder color so that it would not be hard on the eyes of the reader. I would have liked to see pictures or images as talking points. The use of Sandor's picture on the side as the narrator/presenter could have been a bit bigger. When I compared this to my video presentation in which used a different voice, dark color in the background with white or yellow text to complement and moving animations of the text and images and background music this was a complete contrast. Well, maybe, I could of used a picture of myself.
I would recommend for next video to use pictures or images and less text on the screen. Also, a bigger picture of the narrator. I also suggest this video can be used as a follow-up on what not to do when making a video. Sandor's video link https://youtu.be/XaDeJzeSgUM
Mark
I liked the video on Social Media in Higher Education. It was on point with the subtopics: responsible use, privacy and security issues. But I had an issue with too much text on the screen throughout, in many of the screen slides the text was too small. The infographics information as well was too small. In fact, I spent most of my time trying to read and not enjoying the presentation. The color of the text could have been a bit bigger and bolder so that it would not be hard on the eyes to read. I would have liked to see more pictures or images as talking points. When I compared this to my video presentation, I used a different voice, color in the background was consistent, almost the same concept as Mark's own. But I had moving animations of the text, images and background music this was a complete contrast. In fact, we both used the backgrounds that was consistent. I know every time I made a video, I tried to use the same background. Ha ha it is like my signature style. Like Dan, who most times used the classroom whiteboard as the background inside most of his YouTube videos.
I would recommend for next video to use pictures or images and less text on the screen. Also, a voice that does not sound like a lecturer in class of the narrator. I also suggest that this video can also be used as a follow-up on what not to do when making a video for a class assignment. For example, watch the video and make suggestions on what you would add, take away or leave. Then make the video with the changes. This can be an individual or group assignment. Garvin
For Garvin, I liked the video on Social Media in Higher Education. It was original as it used a lot of moving real life graphics in the background and it was very engaging. The flow and transition of the conversation was nice and music in the background was very trendy, upbeat and complimented the topic. The use of color was brilliant. The teacher covered the subtopic: responsible use, privacy and security issues. The teacher’s voice was clear and engaging. In fact, I felt like I was watching a movie. However, I worry about the copyright laws on the use of the graphics and any violations. If there may be any? If none good. If any, may be in the future look for free graphics from creativecommons.org. The reference section for the video should have been placed at the end of the video, but it appeared 3 times in the presentation. I do not know if Garvin was aware of this or not. I feel that it did not take away from the presentation. I suggest maybe next time to edit this out and replay for any errors. When I compared this to my video presentation in which used images from my computer and creativecommons.org, color in the background and moving animations of the text, images and background music this was a complete contrast. I was watching a movie. Hey, did I say that before? Well it is the truth. Ha ha.
I got an idea. Whilst in my garden with the flowers, I envisioned that this YouTube video can be used as a follow-up on what not to do when making a video. I therefore, would recommend that Garvin may want to try that approach. As I reflected, I got takeaways from Garvin’s video when compared to my video. I learned something - using moving digital images and smooth seamless flow. Gavin's video link https://youtu.be/k7YSgeZiKnc

Dan commented on my video he wrote, “Nice video. There is not much to discuss about the content in this assignment so let's discuss the posting strategy. Do you see this approach to using YouTube as private and secure?” I was so excited to be able to engage online in a YouTube platform with a colleague. It was an awesome feeling. I wanted to jump and sing the song; Can You Feel It.
After listening to the song, I quickly pulled my thoughts together. Wow! I reflected and responded to Dan “Hi Dan, thank you for watching my video clip on Social Media in Higher Education on the responsible use, privacy and security in social media platforms. In regard to the approach to the posting strategy for this assignment on YouTube as to being private and secure. Well, it is not really completely private and secure as the post is UNLISTED. That means that anyone in this class can copy and paste to share the link. Then anyone with the shared link for my YouTube video clip have access to it. Therefore, in your YouTube video on the same topic you mentioned that we are acting in good faith. And trusting that everyone is acting in good faith.
I responded, "Dan, what are your thoughts?" Dan responded, “Yes Stacy I agree. We need all members of our LC to be on the same page and there must be some mutual trust”.
Conclusion
After reviewing everyone's YouTube video on social media in higher education and focus on responsible use, privacy and security issues. I would recommend the use of YouTube videos for academic purposes. I think that YouTube videos are an effective method of teaching as students can re-watch important videos related to their subject for revision purposes in preparation for examinations, this is just an example. YouTube videos can be used from any location in the world, even isolated locations using any computing device like a smartphone any time. Just have internet connection. In fact, I have even done it myself to watch a YouTube video over and over again to clarify a point and pressed pause then replay several times. I am no exception. Ha ha.
Did I mention that YouTube is a free media sharing platform? Yup.
Potential Impact
YouTube is an effective way for delivering content materials as other resource materials that the teacher cannot provide for all academic levels. For example, How-to videos and demonstrations, like how to bake a cake from scratch for a newbie cooking student, or a father or house wife who needs to make a cake. The student, father or house wife have no prior knowledge or limited knowledge and skills or need some helpful tips. YouTube video is the way to go!
