Making Video

I reflected on the video on Social Media in Higher Education which outlined responsible use, privacy and security issues in using social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp had some nail biting moments. When using these digital tools within a course, they tools can encourage meaningful engagement and reflection activities in an online and blended course.

As I reflected using the reflection model of Schon 1991, which is reflection in action and on action, I looked at how I made all my previous videos using PowerPoint slides and then converted to video. I also visited my earlier blog post. See link https://ilonkasargent.blogspot.com/p/blog-4.html

I examined the assignment criteria and it provided grades for music, pictures, images. Since I used a new computer that had installed Microsoft Office Suite 2021, I needed to learn how to add background music across all slides. Therefore, I searched the “University of YouTube” online and found helpful tutorials on how to accomplish this task.

In my research efforts on finding research articles on social media in higher education, YouTube video clips on responsible use, privacy and security issues, I was able to immerse myself into a whole new world on things that I had taken for granted. For example, setting account to “Private” and cookies or breadcrumbs that leave digital footprints which can be tracked by anyone. In some cases, possible cyber stalkers.

I learned several alarming things like Facebook, in December 2018, Twitter in July 2020, and Instagram in January, 2021 had cases in privacy & Security issues. The security of personal data was stollen. Wow! These scandals involved the theft of data from half a billion of its users. That is too much! The data stolen included the users' personal data such as their birthdates, phone numbers, email addresses, and full names (Kang, 2021; Reed, 2022).

In the planning and writing of the script for the small video production for 6 to 8 minutes, I wrote in Microsoft Word first and then transfer to the PowerPoint slides. I did not realize that the updated version of Microsoft PowerPoint 2021 had a recording feature that allows for you to copy and paste information in the presenter notes and it can be placed on the screen whilst recording. Brilliant feature that presented a wow moment! I learned how to use this by searching on YouTube how-to-use search feature.

The music presented a challenge. So, I asked my son who likes to play music a lot. He recommended that I search for free music on YouTube music library. Wow, I followed his advice and selected something appropriate for the topic. I also kept in mind copyright laws violations for graphics and images because if I posted something YouTube would take it down or even prohibit me from even uploading the video to the YouTube channel. Where to find free music for your video link Best Copyright Free Music for YouTube Videos — Top 3 Sites - YouTube. I also experienced challenges with the color scheme for the slides and timing. I had to record several slides over until I got under 8 minutes. My creation is given below.

Now when I reflect on what I would do differently. I would check my microphone headset for noise cancelling features so that there is no unwanted static in the background for clearer crisp sound and do not talk so close to the mic. I will have to search on YouTube on how to accomplish that for future recordings. I would also practice different types of “voices” and see how it sounds.
