Podcast vs Video
In one of my classes, I used podcast platform to create how to audio materials for my instructional unit. I used Podbean which is a free podcast hosting site. The account can be signed in and accessed using a Google email account, Facebook account.

As I reflected in this course, I am still making how to videos and tutorials but now using audio visual in the form of video clips and launch on YouTube media sharing platform. YouTube media sharing platform is also free. Awesome! Some of my how-to content materials are in podcast style.
When I reflect on my journey using educational technology tools like Web 2.0 applications such as Google Docs, Google Slides and social software like blogs, wikis, or Facebook, social media sharing like YouTube or Podbean, I think about all sorts of ways to engage a variety of learners.
As I reflected on Podcast vs YouTube, I asked my cat Junei, he was so shy that he placed his paw over his face, as if to say, "do not put me on the spot. Too much pressure!" My shy kitty. Ha ha.
Podcast (audio) material versus YouTube (audio visual) material to engage students would depend on the type of learner or target audience demographics. For example, in higher education I would use Podcast for the learner who likes to listen and YouTube video for the learner who likes audio and visual (multi-media).
In fact, since YouTube is multi-media, YouTube video clip demonstrations can be visually seen whilst listening to the narrator. The body language can also be seen and get a feeling of being there in that space and engage in the content more. The use of close caption for the video clip can cater to learners who may have hearing disabilities, or want to see text. I normally use script text for many of my YouTube videos for learners who may want to read or print materials to review at a later time. Ha ha, for me, I can use either. But my first choice is YouTube because I am a visual learner.
Putting it All Together
I also thought on the bible quote: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). In this context, Both Podcast and YouTube can be used for free across any computing device at any time and any place. They are great for reaching isolated locations for learning online. For podcast vs YouTube it depends on the course purpose, outcome, the type of learner or target audience demographics. A mixture of both could work as well.
As I reflected, on my journey in the making of my podcast using YouTube. I got several takeaways from this course using social media YouTube video in podcast style. I learned something new and have upgraded my skills in the areas of: speaking with limited use of a script, using horizontal or landscape for the Iphone as the camera, building self confidence in front of the camera and smoothing out my facial make-up. Ha ha.
