Updated: Nov 20, 2022

In my reflections on discussion 1 on the topic Research Social Media Revolution/Evolution and a brief overview of what stood out to me in my research and why?

Social Media Revolution 2022

What stood out was that research can be conducted on YouTube. YouTube is also a search engine as it is linked or owned by google. For example, like how to make Tik Tock reels? In the revolution also meteoric rise of mobile apps that thrive on iOS and android mobile platforms upgrade from desktops and laptops.

Why I wanted to understand what each social media was about. This was a part of my expectations for this course. For instance, I expected to improve my understanding of social media and how this area can enhance student’s engagement in different learning environments. I expect to gain new skills in this area.

The three key takeaways that I have learned about social media

  • That sites can Crossover in which multiple post can be linked to other social media apps on their sites.

  • The use of live streaming, short reels and analytics on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

  • The functional features are similar to keep people engaged such as like, dislike, comment, share, subscribe and some have a rewards system like points or coins, except that they appeal to different audiences for advertising and marketing purposes for a business to make a profit.

Feelings

Before

  • I did not have any ideas about the use of various social media types in education except when searching for a YouTube video clip, or creating one for my classes.

After

  • My perception has changed because this module 1 made me realized that social media types can help educational Institutions such as primary, secondary and tertiary levels engage students through the use of right social media for the age levels that use that type of media. For example, secondary-school teachers are engaging students from grades 10 to 12 (ages 15 to 17 years) in the face-to-face learning with social media such as Tik Tok the newest social media used for short video clips of one minute in length for the presentation of assignments. For the majority of teachers, YouTube was used mainly for how-to demonstrations and tutorials for both students and teachers.

  • I can now appreciate the value of social media and the point of views of personal use, and teacher-learner within the various types of education institution.

  • I now valued the discussions with my colleagues at work, which was an eye-opener for me, as many of them were not aware of social media as a teaching tool except for YouTube for how to video clips and Pinterest for personal use for ideas.

For a reflective moment, I would visit my garden outside and smell the flowers and sit and watch them with all their splendid colors and use it for ideas and gather my thoughts.

Analysis

Challenge During Module 1

  • The challenge I experienced during this module 1 was the key types for the social media used in education. I did not realize that the social media for blended, face-to-face and online higher education where not created equal – due to the various demographics, preferred uses, and motivation to use a particular social media.

How Overcome

  • Re-evaluate the assignment, and feedback from my peers in the discussion 1 forum.

  • Re-read the articles on social media for online educational programmes.

  • I also asked questions in the Blackboard Collaborate discuss sessions online.

  • I watched several YouTube videos clips on teacher professional development for online teaching and learning with social media.

Action Plan

  • I intend to apply what I have learned about social media to improve the educational experiences starting with for my colleagues.

Colleagues

  • Conduct departmental online workshop on to improve my colleagues understanding of use of social media as a digital tool to teach and use as a form of expression for students work. This would improve some fears and relevant social media skills to teach in the classroom.

  • Have on-on-one discussions with colleagues who are not in my department so they can understand the use of various types of social media as a digital tool to teach and use as a form of expression for students work.
